The GI Bill is a veteran’s benefit, however, active duty members can also use it to supplement Tuition Assistance and, in cases where Tuition Assistance is unavailable, serve as the primary funding source for school. However, there are two separate programs that members can use the GI Bill under, Chapter 30 (MGIB) or Chapter 33 (post-9/11 GI Bill), and both have payment restrictions for active duty members. The following tables outline how the two programs are administered for veterans and active duty members:
Some members will only have eligibility for one of these programs but many will have eligibility for both. The member will have to weigh the benefits of both and choose one or the other. For more information, stop by the Education and Training Center or call 907-552-3164.
